CLLL Divisions of Play Information

The CLLL Spring regular and post seasons run from March through mid-June.  Post-season District All-Star tournaments for select players age 7 thru 16 follow the end of the CLLL season and could potentially run into mid-to-late August.  Our Fall season runs from late August through the end of October.  No games or practices are typically scheduled during Loudoun County Public School holiday periods.

CLLL has different divisions for players based on their age, experience and ability. "League Age" refers to a player's age as of August 31 of the current year for the Spring season.  The Fall season uses a player's age as of August 31 of the following year.

*Game/Practice days of the week and frequency are not set in stone.  These are typical estimates based on historical scheduling data.  Practice nights are one of the last pieces of the scheduling puzzle to be determined and are not known for each team until about one or two weeks prior to each season.  The beginning of the season for each division with 2 practices and then changes to the normal schedule once the first games begin.  Additionally, the TB, Rookie Machine Pitch and A divisions will feature a couple of weeknight games towards the end of the season.

# - League Age 5 year olds may play Rookie - Machine Pitch, but must have played a year in Tee Ball first. 

## - CLLL evaluates the eligibility of LA 10 year olds for the Majors division on a year to year basis.  This decision is based on a number of factors surrounding the Majors division.

Rookie Machine Pitch (Formerly Coach Pitch - Primarily League Ages 6-8#) This Division provides a transition from T-Ball to Single A. The games will be played 75 minute time limit.  The game will utilize a machine pitcher, positioned no closer than 35' from the plate, that will pitch a maximum of 5 balls to each batter - there are no strikeouts.  After a 3rd strike or 5 pitches, the batter then gets to hit off of a Tee.  A catcher will be utilized. Players are taught the fundamentals of baseball such that they are exposed to playing positions and are taught throwing, catching, batting, defensive ready position and running the bases. Teams are formulated by the CLLL Player Agents in conjuction with the selected Managers for this division. Single A (Primarily League Ages 7-9)  The Single A Division is the first “draft” level division and is primarily for League Age seven and eight year old players.  Requests for teammates and managers are not accepted.  It is an instructional division where players hit regulation little league balls pitched by a combination of a machine operated by the Manager as well as from pitcher players. Protective cups are required, outs are recorded with three ending each half inning, and only nine defensive positions are used (meaning extra players rotate sitting each inning). Players are taught the fundamentals of baseball such that they are exposed to playing positions and are taught throwing, catching, batting, defensive ready position and running the bases.  Youth umpires may be used, scores are kept, and standings are recorded. The team with the best regular season record in each division receives a trophy.  A post-season tournament determines the overall league champion.  Both teams playing in the championship game receive a trophy.  For further specfic rules associated with Single A, please see the CLLL Local Rules under the Documents section of the website. 

AA (Primarily League Ages 8-10) The skills that the players have been accumulating finally come together as they now work as a team pitching, hitting and fielding the ball. Fundamentals and sportsmanship are still stresses along with the strategies required for competitive play. The AA Division teams are formed by "draft" and serves primarily League Age nine and ten year old players.  Eight year old players are allowed to try-out (but fewer than a dozen are typically allowed by the Player Agent to be drafted into AA).  All players are required to try-out and teams are formed through a formal manager draft process supervised by the Player Agent.  Players pitch, protective cups are required, all players bat in the line-up, nine defensive positions are used, and scores and standings are kept.  Trained volunteer umpires enforce Little League Baseball and Local Board Adopted Rules.  Players are taught advanced fundamentals of baseball such that they are exposed to pitching techniques, playing positions, defensive pre-pitch preparedness, live batting, and aggressive base running.  The team with the best regular season record in each division receives a trophy.  A post-season tournament determines the overall league champion.  Both teams playing in the championship game receive a trophy.  For further specfic rules associated with AA, please see the CLLL Local Rules under the Documents section of the website.
  
AAA (Primarily League Ages 9-11) The AAA division is primarily for League Age ten and eleven year old players with some nine year old players traditionally drafted onto AAA Division teams as well.  All players are required to try-out and teams are formed through a formal manager draft process supervised by the Player Agent.  Players pitch, protective cups are required, all players bat in the line-up, the standard nine baseball defensive positions are used, players are now allowed to steal bases and bunt, and scores and standings are kept.  The team with the best regular season record in each division receives a trophy.  A post-season tournament determines the overall league champion.  Both teams playing in the championship game receive a trophy.  For further specfic rules associated with AAA, please see the CLLL Local Rules under the Documents section of the website.
  
Majors (Primary League Ages 10-12) Players continue to refine their skills and compete at a higher level. Little League Baseball, known as the Majors division, is generally oriented for experienced players who are eleven and twelve years old. Occasionally some ten year olds are drafted into the Major Division.  All Majors players are required to try-out, and teams are formed through a formal manager draft process supervised by the Player Agent.  A post-season tournament determines the overall league champion.  Both teams playing in the championship game receive a trophy.  Players who make it to the Little League World Series on TV come from the Majors division of Little League Baseball.   For further specfic rules associated with Majors, please see the CLLL Local Rules under the Documents section of the website. 

Middle School (League Ages 13-14) Each middle school within the boundaries of Central Loudoun Little League will have one middle school baseball team comprised of 7th and 8th grade eligible players.  CLLL middle school teams represent Harper Park MS, J.L. Simpson MS, Smart's Mill MS, and Belmont Ridge MS. This program is an extension of the Central Loudoun Little League Juniors Division and is designed for more competitive play. Team formation will be via tryout and selection by the respective middle school head coach.  Players may only try out for the middle school they attend. If they are home-schooled or attend private school, they may only try out for the middle school in the middle school district where they reside.  If a player does not make his/her middle school baseball team, he/she will be entered back into the CLLL house Juniors league for draft and league play.

Juniors (League Ages 13-14) Players continue to refine their skills and compete at a higher level and on a full-size baseball diamond (60'6" pitching distance with 90' bases). All players wanting to play in the Juniors division must attend a Player Evaluation session prior to a Spring season, and teams are formed through a formal manager draft process supervised by the Player Agent (Spring season only). Players are allowed to take leads and pitchers are taught how to pitch from the “stretch” position and hold runners on base.  For further specfic rules associated with Juniors (type of cleats used, allowable bats, etc.), please see the Little League Rule Book. 

Seniors (League Agess 14-16) Players continue to refine their skills and compete at a higher level and on a full-size baseball diamond (60'6" pitching distance with 90' bases). All players wanting to play in the Seniors division must attend a Player Evaluation session prior to a Spring season, and teams are formed through a formal manager draft process supervised by the Player Agent (Fall season only).
