CENTRAL LOUDOUN LITTLE LEAGUE

Central Loudoun Little League (CLLL) took wings in 1964 and was officially chartered in 1966 when Loudoun County’s population growth caused the original Lower Loudoun Little League (LLLL) to become too large and dispersed for one league to provide adequate services.  CLLL's first budget was $4,500. CLLL’s geographic boundaries extended from Potomac River on the north, east to Broad Run Creek, south to the County line and west to Clark’s Gap.  As the population grew in the 1980’s, CLLL formed two internal leagues, American and National, in 1989.  In 1991, the Dulles Little League (DLL) was chartered as a separate league from CLLL.  Presently, CLLL’s geographic boundaries extend from the Potomac River on the north, east and south to Goose Creek, and west to Clark’s Gap.
 
CLLL, as expected, has changed considerably over the last 40 years from a four team league comprising of Leesburg (3 teams) and Waxpool with approximately 60 players to the present 86 teams in the Spring season with approximately 1,000 players aged 5-12. In addition, today we have approximately another 500 kids participating in our Fall season.
 
Exciting events have occurred during the 1980s, developing and playing on new fields, hosting the 1986 Virginia State Little League Tournament, attending four Virginia Little League Tournaments by winning the District 3 Championships, representation of volunteer umpires at the state, divisional, regional and World Series tournaments, forming the Junior/Senior League and winning the Virginia Good Sport player award.
 
The 1980s began with addition of Good Times Park in 1984.  The Park is the direct result of the generosity of James (J.R.) Wordsworth and the work of Bill Bohince and Bob Barrett who oversaw and shouldered the construction of the complex consisting of three fields (Barrett Field (1984), Bohince Field (1984) and Founders Field (1986)) and a multi-purpose building (Murphy Hall (1986)).  In addition, CLLL assisted in the construction of the Place-to-Play Field at Loudoun County High School including building the concession stand and proving the flagpole.
 
CLLL players excelled in the 1980s by winning its first Major League Virginia District 3 Championship in 1984.  The formation of the Junior/Senior League in 1985 consisted of five teams and approximately 60 players and CLLL won its first Junior League District 3 Championship the same year. Also in 1985, the first Annual Central Loudoun Invitational Tournament for 11 year olds was held and won by CLLL over the July 4 weekend.  In 1986, Good times Park was the site of the Virginia Little League Tournament and the Junior/Senior league expanded to 7 teams.  In 1987, CLLL won its first Senior District 3 Championship coupled with its second Junior District 3 Championship.  Dean Sullivan closed the 80s in excellence style by winning the Virginia Little League Good sport Award.
 
The League’s volunteers continue the major accomplishments in the 80s as John Murphy became CLLL’s first umpire representative to the Virginia Little League Tournament in 1986.  Since then, CLLL has had a umpire at the Virginia State Tournament almost every year.  Also, CLLL’s volunteer umpires have been represented at various Division and Regional Little League Tournaments since 1987.  In 1989, John Murphy became the first umpire to represent CLLL and Virginia District 3 at the Senior Little League World Series.
 
The 1990s began without skipping a beat by the sponsoring of Little League Fall Baseball in 1990 and with plans to sponsor the Challenge Division for physically and mentally impaired in 1991.  CLLL’s John Murphy and Ernie Chandler were also Assistant District 3 Directors with John participating in the District Umpire Association.
 
CLLL’s success can be traced to the CLLL Founders represented by W. D. Parsell and his family who built and maintained Waxpool Little League Field, presently being used by Dulles Little League, and the community service clubs (Kiwanis, Rotary, and VFW) who provided the original financial base for the League.  These original service clubs have been joined by others (Lions, Jaycees, Ruritan, Optimist, and Goose Creek Kiwanis) and a large number of local businesses.  The dedication and commitment of all those who support CLLL insure its capability to meet the future and provide the youth of Loudoun County as opportunity to enjoy the game of baseball.

Today CLLL recognizes its vast history and celebrates it with a revitalization plan for Good Times Park. Recent improvements included new dugouts on Barrett and Founders, a refreshed Murphy Building with working bathrooms, more hardscape areas on Barrett and Founders, handicapped parking and accessibility near Founders field, 3 new batting cages located near the fields and increased parking. The improvement plan for GTP continued in September of 2013 with the installation of Musco lighting on both Barrett and Founders fields.  The latest addition to the complex was the replacement of the batting cage on Founders field with a two-lane covered batting/fielding/pitching facility that was donated by the Bolton family in 2018.
